The Australian dollar hovered around $0.641 on Thursday, holding recent losses as a strengthening US dollar continued to weigh on the currency. The greenback gained after a US federal court ruled that President Donald Trump had exceeded his authority in imposing reciprocal tariffs, ordering the measures to be vacated and permanently blocked. While the Trump administration is expected to appeal, the ruling marked a significant setback to the president’s trade agenda. Domestically, Australia’s monthly CPI indicator came in above expectations for April, raising questions about inflationary pressure. Nevertheless, the Reserve Bank of Australia is still widely expected to continue easing monetary policy, following last week’s 25 basis point rate cut. Easing global tariff risks may also influence the central bank’s outlook on future rate adjustments.

By industry, capital expenditure on buildings and structures saw the biggest gains in arts & recreation (26.2%), health care & social assistance (12.4%), financial & insurance services (6.7%), transport, postal & warehousing (5.9%), and administrative & support services (5.7%). Robert Ewing, head of business statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), commented: “Capex was up 0.9 per cent for buildings and structures, with the mining industry up 1.7 per cent and non-mining rising 0.4 per cent. The growth in mining was driven by spending on oil & gas, gold, and other metal ore developments.“
